India has recorded 56 deaths from 24,849 suspected cases of heat stroke between March and May, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data.
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reports that 46 of these deaths occurred in May alone. The numbers may be higher as data from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi are still pending.
Heatwave conditions have gripped large parts of the country, with a significant number of deaths reported among poll-duty staff in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Other states affected include Odisha, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
Officials caution that the current data may not reflect the final count due to issues in data entry from various states.
