C R Vijayan, deputy secretary general, General Insurance Council, has taken over as acting secretary general(SG)) of the council, the official representative body of the general insurance industry, after MN Sarma ended his three and half year tenure as SG on Tuesday.
Though, Inderjeet Singh, director and general manager, GIC Re has already been appointed as the secretary general of the GI Council in January first week, he is yet to join as his application for availing voluntary retirement scheme(VRS) is still pending for government’s approval.
Recently, the GI Council, with 31 players, which has always been headed by a CMD of a PSU general insurance company since its inception, got its first private sector chairman as Tapan Singhel , MD& CEO, Bajaja Allianz General Insurance, was elected by its executive council to head the body which acts like a self regulatory organization(SRO) of the Indian general industry.
GI Council, with more members including from the government, is expected to play a much larger role in the industry after proposed amendments in the Insurance Acts are passed by the parliament.
