The final conclusion of SIT formed by Assam police confirms that the insured motorcycle was implanted to the incident to extract compensation by fraudulent means, which exposed a highly organized manipulation of accident records.
Mumbai:In a significant development, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam has concluded that a motorcycle was fraudulently “implanted” into a 2015 road accident case in an alleged attempt to illegally claim insurance benefits from ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd.
The case pertains to a motor accident in Bongaigaon, Assam, involving an alleged collision between a motorcycle and a bicycle. Suspecting discrepancies in the claim, ICICI Lombard initiated an extensive on-ground investigation and undertook a detailed review of the case.
The breakthrough came when the insurer obtained the relevant Police General Diary Entries (GDEs) through the Right to Information (RTI) Act. A cross-verification of these records allegedly revealed that the vehicle insured by ICICI Lombard had been substituted for the motorcycle that was actually involved in the accident.
Armed with this evidence, ICICI Lombard approached the Gauhati High Court. Taking cognizance of the matter, the court referred the case to the Assam SIT constituted pursuant to directions issued by the Supreme Court in the case of Safiq Ahmad vs ICICI Lombard GIC Ltd (SLP No. 1110/2017).
Following a comprehensive investigation, the SIT reportedly confirmed the fraud. The probe found significant discrepancies between the vehicle registration number recorded in the initial Police General Diary Entry and the registration number mentioned in the formal FIR filed later.
According to the SIT’s findings, the insured motorcycle was inserted into the accident records with the intent of extracting compensation through fraudulent means, pointing to what investigators described as a highly organised manipulation of accident documentation.
Commenting on the development, Nazeem Khan, Head – Motor Claims at ICICI Lombard, said, “At ICICI Lombard, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity in claims management. Every claim is assessed with diligence, objectivity and transparency. Our focus remains on honouring genuine claims while safeguarding the process against inaccuracies, thereby reinforcing trust among our customers and stakeholders.”
The company said it continues to strengthen its claims governance framework by leveraging advanced analytics, field investigations and robust internal controls. According to ICICI Lombard, this integrated approach helps enhance accuracy, reduce turnaround times and ensure consistency in decision-making, thereby reinforcing confidence across the insurance ecosystem.
