Kasturi Sengupta takes over as new Secy General of GI Council

Mumbai:Kasturi Sengupta, 60, has assumed charge, on Thursday, as the new secretary general of Mumbai headquartered General Insurance Council(GI Council), the official representative body for Rs 3.36 trillion general insurance industry, composed of 34 general insurance companies across the segments.

Sengupta, who will be the first female secretary general of GI Council, retired from the New India Assurance(NIA) as an executive director in March end.

She had started her career at another PSU general insurer- National Insurance Company in 1989 and has managed multifarious responsibilities over the years.

She was selected for the post recently after interviewing a few short-listed professionals from PSU and private sector companies.

Her immediate task, after joining the GI Council, will be to assist the government to develop Bharat Marine Pool with a capacity of $100 million, which will be manged by GIC Re and participated by other insurers including New India Assurance.

The post of secretary general at General Council had fallen vacant after Inderjeet Singh had quit the job to join as an Insurance Ombudsman at Patna.

Set up by the insurance regulator IRDAI, since 2001, after the Indian insurance was opened up for the private sector companies, the GI Council has provided leadership on issues having a bearing on the industry’s collective strength and image and to shape and influence decisions made by the Government, regulator and other public authorities in order to benefit the industry and customers at large.

It is currently headed by Tapan Singhel, MD &CEO, Bajaj General Insurance , as the chairman.

The government in the recently enacted the Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Act, 2025, have provision to strengthen the position of GI Council further by inducting two additional members.

    I met her in NIC Ranade Marg Dadar W Divisional office .She offered to help my daughter in case of need who was pursuing her degree in IHMCT Mumbai and I felt that she is very kind and generous. I was posted in Kanpur DO 1 as Sr DM.
