Tamil Nadu pays Rs 1237.80 cr of premium to UII for renewing state’s health insurance scheme in 2026-27

The scheme provides cashless hospitalization for specific ailments/procedures up to ₹5,00,000 per family per year on a floater basis and from January 2022 to 2027, the scheme is being implemented through UII.

Chennai:The Govt of Tamilnadu on Monday has renewed their prestigious Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) with United India Insurance (UIIC) for another year(Jan11, 2026, to Jan10, 2027) and paid a premium of Rs 1237.80 cr for covering 1.45 cr families .

The CMCHIS provides cashless hospitalization health insurance coverage up to Rs5 lakh per family per year(annual premium being Rs849 per family) on a floater basis for specified ailments and procedures in empanelled government and private hospitals.

From January 2022 to 2027, the scheme is being implemented through UII.

The CMCHIS covers over 2,053 treatments, including 52 diagnostic and 8 follow-up procedures, across more than 800 government and 900 private empanelled hospitals.The objective of the CMCHIS is to reduce the financial hardship of medical expenses for enrolled families by providing quality healthcare and moving towards universal health coverage in Tamilnadu.

A formal function was arranged by the Tamil Nadu government wherein the cheque was handed over by Ma.Subramanian, health minister to BS Rahul, CMD,UII.

The government also honoured honoured the TPAs who are serving the scheme, best performing hospitals, best performing district project team and medical officers.

To be part of CMCHIS, the family’s total annual income should be less than Rs1,20,000 per annum (increased from Rs72,000).The family is defined as the eligible member, their legal spouse, children (up to age 25 if dependent, unmarried, and unemployed), and dependent parents.Differently abled persons and their family members are eligible for the scheme without any income ceiling, provided at least one member is differently abled.

Recently UII was selected by the Punjab government to provide health insurance coverage of Rs 1,00,000 per family for all 65 lakh families in the state.

Punjab’s `Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna’ providing free cashless medical treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh to every family in the state will be formally launched on January 15.
