The Bombay High Court has directed the adjudicating authority to re-hear the matter in light of the decision of the GST Council and the circulars,’’ the insurer said in a regulatory filing.
Mumbai: In a relief to ICICI Lombard General Insurance, a positive development for other insurers also, the Bombay High Court on Thursday has dismissed a goods and services tax (GST) demand order of Rs 1,901.75 crore crore issued to the company, and directed the adjudicating authority to re-hear the case keeping in mind the recent GST Council’s stance and related circulars.
“The company has received a communication from its tax advisors on July 2, 2025 at 5:29 p.m. regarding the order passed by the Hon’ble Bombay High Court (Hon’ble Court) setting aside the order passed by the adjudicating authority confirming the said demand. The Hon’ble Court has noted that the GST Council has considered the issue and also issued Circulars in this regard. The Hon’ble Court has therefore directed the adjudicating authority to re-hear the matter in light of the decision of the GST Council and the circulars,’’ the insurer said in a regulatory filing.
Earlier, ICICI Lombard General Insurance had received an order from the joint commissioner, CGST & CX Thane Commissionerate, for the period July 2017 to March 2022, confirming GST demand of Rs 1,728.86 crore along with a a penalty of Rs 172, 88 crore.
The order refers to matters, which are relating to industry wide issues and many other industry players had also received such GST demands.
Subsequently, the insurer had filed a writ petition before the Bombay High Court against the said order.
