13 people killed and 30 injured as Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express collides with a goods train

Kolkata: 13 people were killed and at least 25 were injured as the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express collided with a goods train on Monday morning near West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri. Two coaches of the train were derailed.

The Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express collided with a goods train on Monday morning near New Jalpaiguri, a senior North Frontier Railway (NFR) official said.

The mishap occured due to overshooting of signal by the goods train which rammed into Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express, according to reports.

“Five people, including the driver of Kanchenjunga Express, died on the spot while 25 were injured, Abhishek Roy, Additional SP Kurseong said.

He said that the police was trying to rescue those stuck.

“Unfortunate accident in NFR zone. Rescue operations going on at war footing. Railways, NDRF and SDRF are working in close coordination. Injured are being shifted to the hospital. Senior officials have reached site,” posted Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on X.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to X to express her shock over the incident and said that rescue and relief operations were underway. “Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train. DM, SP, doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, medical assistance. Action on war-footing initiated,” Banerjee said.
