Markel, the insurance operations within Markel Group Inc. has appointed Priyanka Gautama as chief underwriting officer for its Indian operations, subject to regulatory approval.
Gautama’s arrival underscores the organisation’s commitment to recruiting top-tier talent as it continues to serve brokers locally through superior underwriting, while supporting the business’s overarching strategy of accelerating profitable growth across Asia.
Markel is the only syndicate of Lloyd’s of London which is operating in India and already have over 20 staff and have set up a back office here, to support their APAC and Middle East operations.
More Syndicates are expected to set up their operations in India soon.
Operating from Markel’s Mumbai office, Gautama will collaborate with leadership teams across multiple geographies and product lines to develop bespoke insurance solutions for clients.
She will play an instrumental role in the enhancement of the Markel India product suite, and particularly in the development of a new casualty portfolio. She will also be responsible for core underwriting strategies and decision-making, helping to drive profitability across the organisation’s portfolios.
In her new role, Gautama will report directly to Deepika Mathur, Managing Director of Markel, India.

Since then, we’ve established the Markel brand in our specialist markets by forging strong relationships with customers and stakeholders, as well as enhancing our systems and service capabilities to support brokers more effectively.”
Gautama brings 20 years of experience in the domestic market, with cross-functional experience and expertise across casualty and financial lines. Prior to joining Markel, she was senior vice president of Liability Underwriting and Claims at HDFC ERGO General Insurance.
Before this appointment, she spent more than 11 years working for TATA AIG General Insurance.
