With 22,771 people testing positive for coronavirus in the highest single-day spike so far, India's COVID-19 tally climbed to?6,48,315 on Saturday, while the death toll rose to 18,655 with 442 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.
The western state of Maharashtra, home to the densely packed financial capital Mumbai, has the country’s highest total, recording 6,364 fresh cases of the virus on Saturday and 198 deaths from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.
India has the fourth-most confirmed cases in the world, exceeding 640,000 on Saturday, according to health ministry data. It follows the United States, Brazil and Russia.
With a steady rise, the number of recoveries stands at 3,94,226 and one patient has migrated. There are 2,35,433 active cases of coronavirus presently in the country, the updated data at 8 am showed

Of the 442 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, 198 are from Maharashtra, 64 from Tamil Nadu, 59 from Delhi, 21 from Karnataka, 18 each from Gujarat and West Bengal, 14 from Uttar Pradesh, 10 from Rajasthan, eight each from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, five from Punjab, four each from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, three from Bihar, two each from Assam and Odisha.
Officials in Mumbai warned residents to stay away from the coast, as heavy rains were predicted for the next 48 hours. The monsoons typically cause waterlogging in many parts of the city and could scuttle coronavirus containment efforts by causing a further rise in infection numbers, experts say.
In the southern state of Tamil Nadu, the second worst-hit state in India, the number of cases crossed 100,000.
India had imposed one of the world’s harshest lockdowns in March to control the virus spread, but it has been eased in phases in recent weeks to restart economic activity. Epidemiologists warn India’s peak could still be weeks or months away, suggesting the country’s already severely overburdened healthcare system will come under further stress.
On Thursday, there was a daily increase of 20,903 in total cases, Covid-19 tally in the country has risen from 604,641 to 625,544, an increase of 3.5%.Death toll has reached 18,213, with 379 fatalities in a day. India is the fourth-most-affected country by total cases, and eighth by death toll.
With 20,032 new recoveries, the most reported by India in a day so far, its recovery rate has improved to 60.7%; death rate remains unchanged at 2.9%.
India’s new daily closed cases stand at 20,411 — 379 deaths and 20,032crecoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.86%.
India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 3.4%.
India’s doubling time for total cases has reduced to 20.4 days, and that for active cases has zoomed to 320.1 days. Doubling time for deaths, meanwhile, stands at 33 days.
The states and UTs that have seen their respective sharpest single-day spikes in total cases are Tamil Nadu (4,343), Karanataka (1,502), Telangana (1,213), Andhra Pradesh (845), Gujarat (681), and Haryana (568).
