In a slew of innovative CSR(Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives, state owned GIC Re is providing financial support to projects in wide spectrum of areas including rural development, healthcare and scientific research in the country.
The latest being in Maharashtra, where the reinsurer has partnered with the state government strengthening state’s community institutions, promoting sustainable social, economic and rural transformation for the holistic village development through gender sensitive and inclusive social, economic and rural measures and development planning.
The state government is currently implementing Mission MahaGram, a socio-economic and rural transformation program across 101 villages of five districts- Ch. Sambhajinagar, Latur, Parbhani, Solapur and Dharashiv (Osmanabad) through through Village Social Transformation Foundation (VSTF).
GIC Re is contributing over Rs 11.88 crore to VSTF for this purpose.
More of these kind of projects with other state governments are on the anvil.

Earlier, it had partnered with IIT Madras to develop a novel Urine-based Tuberculosis diagnosis technology, expected to be rapid and affordable in comparison to the existing point-of-care diagnostic kits available for various diseases such as blood glucose monitors.
The key beneficiaries of this project, which is getting CSR funding from the GIC Re, would be primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare centres besides the Health departments in State and Central Governments.
In education, school benches have been given and VJTI college in Mumbai, is given a grant for renovation and development of Mechanical Heat Transfer Lab.
Tata ACTREC
GIC Re has provided funds to equip Medical Gastroenterology unit with Endoscopy System with accessories and development of patients waiting area near Shanti Sadan OPD Block(this construction is yet to begin). The total amount requested for the project is almost Rs. 4.5 crore
Leprosy Mission Trust
GIC Re has funded Reconstructive Surgery for people affected by leprosy’. It has contributed funds amounting to almost Rs.4.91 crore for 1200 leprosy patients. There are extremely few specialised hospitals in the country providing reconstructive surgery treatment to those affected by leprosy.
This treatment is proposed at their 15 hospitals in 9 states of India. The Leprosy Mission Trust India(TLMTI)is the largest leprosy-focused non-governmental organisation in India and is headquartered in New Delhi and provides solutions like physiotherapy, psychological counselling to deal with mental health crisis arising out of the situation, and mobility aids to enable a beneficiary to lead a self-dependent life.
Mumbai’s Nair Hospital has also been given a handsome amount for Solar energy.
Special Olympics Bharat
GIC Re provides funds for training of athletes for Special Olympics Bharat, recognized by the government of India for the development of sports for persons with intellectual Disabilities(ID).
In India the program expands to all the States and Union Territories registering over 1.7 million athletes. Special Olympics Bharat plans to organize National Health festival every year covering 34 states — 70 districts in an attempt to bring back 20000 athletes in the coming months.
