The General Insurance Council (GI Council), self-regulatory body of the general insurance industry, has invited applications for the post of its secretary general as the incumbent MN Sarma’s three year tenure is coming to an end in July 31.
A committee headed by chairman of the council Anjan Dey, CMD, Oriental Insurance Company, along with other members including a nominee from the regulator IRDAI, will be interviewing the eligible candidates to select a suitable candidate.
With the new IRDAI chairman Debasish Panda having already announced that the GI Council will be converted into an out out a professional body to deal with data and new innovative ideas, it is expected that the new secretary general will play a key role in the changing the existing functioning of the council.
The post has been held mostly by retiring CMDs of PSU general insurance companies except R Chandrasekran, who had both public sector and private sector exposure.
“There are indication that, a private sector professional may be appointed this time,” said industry sources.
The tenure of the post of secretary general will be for a period of three years from the date of joining with an upper age limit of 65 years at the time of laying down office at the GI Council
Aspirants for the post should preferably have at least 25 years in the area of non-life insurance with the current or the last position being not below the rank of general manager of PSU non-life insurance company/reinsurer or should preferably have worked or currently working at top management with a private sector insurer/reinsurer.
The candidates should not be more than 62 years of age as on July 31.
Among others, the job profile of the secretary general of GI Council includes-
-To be a spokesperson for the general insurance industry,
– Regular interactions with IRDAI, senior officials of various departments in Government of India, judiciary, CEOs/CMDs and senior executives or officials of member insurers and reinsurers and other stakeholders such as trade bodies and consumer associations as needed,
-Lead a team of domain experts across all lines of business in the general insurance industry and reinsurance sector for industry-wide initiatives of best practices,
-Spread consumer awareness and education on insurance principles and products.
The post carries a fixed package of Rs 3.5 lakh per month.
