Tech giant Xiaomi patents earthquake monitoring mobile tech

The patent describes a system that is capable of reading/monitoring seismic activity from a mobile equipment. This technology would be used in detecting earthquakes, reports GizmoChina.

The ‘mobile device’ would transfer key data obtained to send it to an earthquake processing center.

The system would also permit the underlying processor to identify and predict earthquake events based on multiple readings, the report added.

India antitrust probe finds Google abused Android dominance, report shows

Alphabet Inc’s Google reduced “the ability and incentive of device manufacturers to develop and sell devices operating on alternative versions of Android,” says the June report by the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) investigations unit.

The U.S. tech giant told Reuters in a statement it looks forward to working with the CCI to “demonstrate how Android has led to more competition and innovation, not less.”

Biden asks world leaders to cut methane in climate fight

Biden made the remarks during a virtual meeting of the Major Economies Forum (MEF), a follow-up to an Earth Day meeting he hosted in April to unveil new U.S. greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets and press other countries to do more to curb theirs.

The United Kingdom heeded the call, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledging to be among the first signatories of the Global Methane Pledge to reduce emissions of the harmful gas.

Argentina, Indonesia, Italy and Mexico also joined the alliance, while Ghana and Iraq signaled interest in joining, according to a White House summary of the meeting, which noted those countries represent six of the top 15 methane emitters globally.

NIH grants $470 mln to conduct studies on long-term effects of COVID-19

The grant is part of an initiative the main U.S. health research body launched in February to understand why symptoms of the illness persist long after infection in some cases – a condition known as “long COVID”- and why some individuals develop new or returning symptoms after recovery.

The most common prolonged symptoms include pain, headaches and fatigue, but the condition has been linked to a higher risk of kidney problems as well as smell distortions in other studies.

While reviewing the progress of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (DME) at Dausa, in Rajasthan, Gadkari said like electric railway engines, buses and trucks will also be powered by electricity.

”It is my dream to build an electric highway from Delhi to Jaipur. It is still a proposed project. We are in discussion with a foreign company,” he said. Gadkari said as a transport minister, he has taken a resolution to bring an end to the use of petrol and diesel in the country.

Almost half of 140 million people around the world, who are hit by to disasters caused by extreme weather fuelled by climate change, with more severe storms, floods, and heatwaves live in the Asia-Pacific region, the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said in a report published this week.
“Recovery from disasters is so much harder when livelihoods have been hit hard by COVID-19 and the measures taken to contain it,” said Maarten van Aalst, director of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and author of the report.

The cumulative COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country crossed 78 crore on Friday. The government said 20 per cent of India’s adult population have received both doses of COVID-19 vaccine and 62 per cent have got at least one dose.

Of all the vaccines used, around 87.8 per cent are Covishield manufactured by Serum Institute, around 12.11 per cent are Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and less than one per cent Sputnik V.
