New Delhi: There is no specific prohibition on the use and adoption of AI-based tools by any government departments as this is an emerging technology with great potential in citizen-oriented web applications, Union minister Jitendra Singh said on Thursday.

However, government functionaries are expected to exercise due diligence and caution to ensure safety, security and confidentiality of public information while using any digital technology or platform, he said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions does not maintain any data regarding the use of any artificial intelligence (AI) applications by officials of various departments, Minister of State for Personnel Singh said.

He was responding to a query whether officials of various departments are using ChatGPT and other such applications to draft letters and create other reports.

“There is no specific prohibition on the use and adoption of AI-based tools by any government departments as this is an emerging technology with great potential in various citizen oriented web applications,” Singh said.

The use of any application, tool or website by government officials is governed in terms of cyber security guidelines and departmental security instructions issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Ministry of Home Affairs and other relevant authorities, the minister said.
