India records highest single-day spike of 8,380 cases; death toll climbs to 5,164

The death toll has gone up by 193 since Saturday morning, of which 99 were from Maharashtra, 27 from Gujarat, 18 from Delhi, nine each from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, seven from West Bengal, six each from Tamil Nadu and Telangana, five in Bihar, three from Uttar Pradesh, two from Punjab, and one each from Haryana and Kerala.

Insurers stare at a Rs 2000 crore hit from “Amphan” devastated WB and Orissa

Till Saturday, the general insurance industry had already received claims worth of Rs 945 crore from these two states with more than 90 per cent of the total claims originating from the economically developed WB, with higher insurable industral areas, where torrential rains coupled with strong winds caused severe flooding and wind related damages especially in the Kolkata metro region, resulting in inundation and damage of both public and private infrastructure. 

Around Rs 836 crore of claims have been triggered by the property damages under fire policies from the WB and rest are from motor and other policies.

Crashed Pakistan A320 jet insured for $19.7 million: airline document

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Airbus SE A320 jet that crashed into a crowded residential district of Karachi last week killing 97 people on board was insured for $19.7 million,The family of each victim is being provided Rs1m for making arrangements for burial. In addition, the legal heirs of those who died in the crash would get Rs5m each.

Indian states rush to identify high-risk zones to remain in lockdown

In its guidelines, ‘Mission Begin Again’, issued on Sunday, Maharashtra departed from the Centre’s guidelines. CM Uddhav Thackeray said the state needed to tread cautiously now that monsoon was round the corner. It said intra-district bus services can operate, but inter-district bus operations will remain restricted.

Restrictions will remain in force in containment zones and the municipal corporation areas of Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad. In phase 1 of the easing starting June 3, individuals in these areas will be allowed to exercise in open public spaces including beaches, playgrounds, gardens and promenades between 5 am and 7 pm. 

US terminating relationship with WHO; takes steps against China

Chinese officials ignored their reporting obligations to the World Health Organization and pressured the World Health Organization to mislead the world when the virus was first discovered by Chinese authorities. Countless lives have been taken, and profound economic hardship has been inflicted all around the globe, US President Donald Trump said.

Stating that the funding of the WHO would now be diverted to other global public health organisations, Trump announced a series of decisions against China including issuing proclamation to deny entry to certain Chinese nationals and tightening of regulations against Chinese investments in America.
Trump also announced that the US will end special treatment of Hong Kong in response to Chinese imposition of new controls.

He said that the US will revise its travel advisory to warn of surveillance in Hong Kong.

AXA agrees to pay Covid-19 Business Interruption claims to French restaurants after court ruling

Delhi-Moscow AI flight returns midway after pilot found COVID-19 positive

According to standard operating procedure, pilots and other crew members of any flight are required to undergo mandatory testing for coronavirus and are assigned duties if the laboratory results are negative.

The Director General of Civil Aviation has already begun an investigation into the case based on a preliminary report by Air India, the officials said.

The death toll due to COVID-19 rose to 4,971 and the number of cases climbed to 1,73,763 in the country registering a record single-day spike of 265 deaths and 7,964 cases till Saturday 8 am, according to the Union health ministry.
Religious places of worship for public, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and other hospitality services will be opened from June 8, the guidelines stated.
