Delta variant forces new lockdowns across world as Europe eases curbs

Bangladesh announced that it would impose a new national lockdown from Monday over the variant, with offices shut for a week and only medical-related transport allowed. India records 50,040 new COVID-19 cases, Centre presents vaccination roadmap to SC

The active cases constitute about 1.94 per cent of the total cases. Around 32.17 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far under the country’s vaccination drive. 64.25 lakh doses were administered in the last 24 hours.
The government said besides these, over 7.84 crore doses have been administered to persons between 18 to 44 years of age.

“Total 44.2 per cent of the priority population of persons above 45 years of age and 13 per cent of the population group of 18-44 years of age have received the first vaccine dose,” the Centre said in its affidavit filed in the top court in the suo motu matter on COVID-19 management.

“Delta plus is having greater affinity to mucosal lining in the lungs, higher compared to other variants, but if it causes damage or not is not clear yet. It also does not mean that this variant will cause more severe disease or it is more transmissible,” Arora said.

He said the impact of the Delta plus strain will become clear only as more cases are identified but it appears that the disease is generally mild in all those who have got either single or double dose of the vaccine.
