Covid-19 Pandemic: $30 bn needed to develop tests, treatments, vaccines,says WHO

Renewing its call on Friday for global collaboration against the pandemic, it said $3.4 billion had been contributed for the coalition to date, leaving a funding gap of $27.9 billion. Of that, $13.7 billion was “urgently needed”.

The WHO is working with a large coalition of drug-development, funding and distribution organisations under what it calls the ACT-Accelerator Hub.

The initiative is intended to develop and deliver 500 million Covid-19 tests and 245 million courses of new treatment for the disease to low- and middle-income countries by mid-2021, it said in a statement.

WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine candidate was “not far behind” AstraZeneca’s, among more than 200 candidates, 15 of which have entered clinical trials.

Pakistan pilot licence irregularities are ‘serious lapse’ – IATA

“We are following reports from Pakistan regarding fake pilot licences, which are concerning and represent a serious lapse in the licensing and safety oversight by the aviation regulator,” an IATA spokesman said, adding that the organisation was seeking more information.

Pakistan’s civil aviation authority has found that some 150 of PIA’s 434 pilots have “dubious licences”, the airline said.

IMF warns markets at risk of correction after run-up

A correction could be prompted by a deeper and longer recession than currently anticipated, a second wave of the virus or reinstated containment methods. A broadening of global social unrest in response to rising economic inequality could also damage investor sentiment, the IMF said.

“We worry about scarring in the economy, meaning the crisis might be longer than expected and deeper than expected,” said Adrian. “Scarring is due to the high level of unemployment and the potential for insolvency. These are difficult to reverse.”

UN chief criticises lack of global cooperation on COVID-19

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said it’s important to use that fact to make countries understand that bringing them together, putting together their capacities, not only in fighting the pandemic in a coordinated way but in working together to have the treatments, testing mechanisms, the vaccines accessible to everybody, that this is the way we defeat the pandemic.
