Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who had last week announced tax sops and measures for sectors such as auto, announced four new set of mergers — Punjab National Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India will combine to form the nation’s second-largest lender; Canara Bank and Syndicate Bank will merge; Union Bank of India will amalgamate with Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank; and Indian Bank will merge with Allahabad Bank.

The unemployment rate among women in India is more than double of that of men with similar qualifications, a new study has revealed. Titled “Gender Inclusion in Hiring in India”, the study by two Harvard students, Rachel Levenson and Layla O’Kane, noted that 8.7 per cent of working-age urban, educated women in the country are unemployed but only 4 per cent of comparable men find themselves without a job.

In an earlier missive to the chairman of the insurance regulator IRDAI SC Khuntia, the IBAI has said, “ An online survey of brokers was conducted where a slight majority (51%) were against FDI being increased and a significant majority (49%) were in favour. The IBAI work on the basis of the majority view and it is this context that the IBAI would like to reiterate the stand that it has consistently taken which is that FDI at this stage is not recommended for the industry.

The UN-Water Global Assessment and Analysis of Sanitation and Drinking-Water 2019 (known as the GLAAS report) surveyed 115 countries and territories, representing 4.5 billion people. It showed that, in an overwhelming majority of countries, the implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene policies and plans is constrained by inadequate human and financial resources. Nineteen countries and one territory reported a funding gap of more than 60% between identified needs and available funding. Less than 15% of countries have the financial or human resources needed to implement their plans.
More favorable pricing permeates global reinsurance industry, but is it sustainable
Third-party capital continues to proliferate as investor interest has increased alongside more varied reinsurance structures, and has become more closely aligned with traditional reinsurance capital. Despite the capital markets’ increased influence, dedicated reinsurance capacity essentially remained flat in 2018, at $436 billion, with a single-digit percentage increase in convergence capital to $95 billion from $87 billion in 2017.
