The Facebook chief’s statement was in keeping with his efforts this year to frame the company’s more critical problems as part of broader issues for the internet at large. Zuckerberg’s willingness to embrace regulation could pave the way toward taking the thorniest problems about speech and privacy out of Facebook’s hands — or at least give the company more time to solve them.

“To be clear, these passwords were never visible to anyone outside of Facebook and we have found no evidence to date that anyone internally abused or improperly accessed them,” vice president of engineering, security, and privacy Pedro Canahuati said in a blog post.

The survey also gauged public reaction to more limited uses of autonomous vehicles. Just more than half of U.S. drivers—53 percent—said they would be comfortable using fully self-driving vehicles as low-speed people-mover systems at airports or theme parks, free from the chaotic traffic of the open road. Even fewer Americans—44 percent—said they would be comfortable with autonomous delivery vehicles that haul food or packages, not passengers.

The company has previously characterised the software upgrades as an effort to make a safe plane even safer.
