India among top three countries facing phishing attacks via WhatsApp and Telegram, reveals report

The biggest share of detected malicious links between December 2020 and May were sent via WhatsApp (89.6 per cent), followed by Telegram (5.6 per cent), according to data shared by Kaspersky Internet Security for Android, part of the cyber security firm Kaspersky Lab.
Countries experiencing the highest number of phishing attacks were Russia (46 per cent), Brazil (15 per cent) and India (7 per cent).

The government, however, dismissed allegations of any kind of surveillance on its part on specific people, saying it ”has no concrete basis or truth associated with it whatsoever”.

2000% increase in cyber security breaches during pandemic

“In India, almost every sector has been breached because they all are inter-connected. During the pandemic, the number of breaches increased by 2,000 per cent because we were using ASL or DSL from home. ASL, DSL, fibre, nothing is secured, this whole scenario reflects that your sensitive information is at risk and is being used for a variety of purposes, causing financial fraud, causing a threat to national security,” Rai said.
The Ministry of Home Affairs’ National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), which was launched in August 2019, has recorded over four lakh complaints, with about 50 per cent related to financial frauds, revealed Ashok Kumar, Director, Ministry of Home Affairs.

Facebook, others ‘killing people’ by carrying COVID misinformation, says Biden

US President’s comments came a day after US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declared misinformation about the vaccines a threat to public health, and as US officials advised that deaths and serious illness from the virus are almost entirely preventable because of the vaccines.

Collaboration between Delhi Police, DoT to help trace IMEI numbers of lost mobile phones

The project, which has been launched in Maharashtra and Delhi to facilitate blocking and tracing of lost and stolen mobile phones, will discourage snatching and thefts of mobile phones and also help check their resale, officials said.IMEI is a 15-digit identifier for each mobile phone used in the telecom network and according to the police, there have been many cases of cloned and duplicated IMEI handsets.

U.S. launches online hub to help ransomware victims

The new website, www.StopRansomware.gov, is an initiative led by the Justice and Homeland Security departments.
The launch of the new website and the $10 million reward come on the heels of a ransomware attack earlier this year against the Colonial Pipeline Co. that led to widespread shortages at gas stations along the East Coast of the United States. The Justice Department was later able to help Colonial Pipeline recover some $2.3 million in cryptocurrency ransom it paid to hackers.

About $350 million in ransom was paid to cyber criminals in 2020, a more than 300% increase from the previous year, the department said.
