COVID-19 numbers in SE Asia plateaued over past month mainly due to cases in India remaining stable: WHO

The highest number of new cases were reported from India (278,631 new cases; 20.2 new cases per 100,000; 2 per cent decrease), Indonesia (225,635 new cases; 82.5 new cases per 100,000; 18 per cent decrease), and Thailand (141,191 new cases; 202.3 new cases per 100 000; 20 per cent increase).

In the region, the highest numbers of new deaths were reported from Indonesia (11,373 new deaths; 4.2 new deaths per 100,000; 9 percent decrease), India (3511 new deaths; 0.3 new deaths per 100,000; 8 percent decrease), and Myanmar (2045 new deaths; 3.8 new deaths per 100,000; 22 percent decrease).

The latest Monthly Economic Review, released by the finance ministry, said the ”robust recovery in tax collections cushions the fisc towards meeting the budgeted support to the economy”.

It also said the recent sero-prevalence results signify that India can reduce the likelihood of severe illness due to COVID-19 if the country sustains the momentum of the vaccination programme.

”Having antibodies reduces the probability of acquiring serious illnesses, as is borne by studies. So, any subsequent waves are expected to be mild in terms of severity of disease,” the ministry said in the report.

The National Health Authority (NHA) has been providing the necessary support to the states and Union territories for ensuring free COVID-19 testing and treatment to all eligible beneficiaries under AB-PMJAY.

When the pandemic broke out, the existing packages were used for providing treatment, Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar said.

Max Financial Services net profit falls 80 pc to Rs 36 crore in Jun qtr

The company’s subsidiary Max Life reported a 32 percent jump in new business premium during the quarter at Rs 875 crore, as against Rs 661 crore in the year-ago period.

The renewal premium income (including group) rose 21 percent to Rs 2,244 crore, taking the gross written premium to Rs 3,484 crore, a spurt of 27 percent over the first quarter of the previous fiscal, the company said.

HC seeks Delhi govt, IRDA stand on plea against insurance co not paying full claim on Covid death

The plea further sought to direct the IRDA to take strict action against the insurance firm for violating its guidelines, framed for insurers to include the expense incurred on hospitalization and treatment of COVID-19 patients, and to ensure its compliance so that no insurer may escape from their liability of making payment.
