SC seeks finance ministry’s reply on waiver of interest on loans during moratorium period

The bench was hearing a plea, filed by Gajendra Sharma, in which he has sought a direction to declare the portion of RBI’s March 27 notification “as ultra vires to the extent it charges interest on the loan amount during the moratorium period, which create hardship to the petitioner being borrower and creates hindrance and obstruction in ‘right to life’ guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution of India”.

India’s COVID-19 tally reaches 2,16,919 with record spike of 9,304 cases; death toll 6,075

Of the 260 deaths reported since Wednesday morning, 122 were in Maharashtra, 50 in Delhi, 30 in Gujarat, 11 in Tamil Nadu, 10 in West Bengal, seven each in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana, six in Rajasthan, four in Andhra Pradesh and one each in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Punjab and Uttarakhand.

Mumbai avoids brunt of cyclone that barrels into India’s west coast

Cyclone Nisarga also did not cause any major damage on the southern coast of Gujarat on Wednesday afternoon and evening following landfall near Alibaug in Maharashtra. The Gujarat government had evacuated over 63,700 people from coastal areas of eight districts and 18 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and six teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were deployed for rescue operations.

Flight operations resumed at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Arrivals and departures were suspended at 2:30 pm due to strong crosswinds induced by Cyclone Nisarga.

Modifications in National Pension Scheme financially untenable Finance Ministry

“In fact, the Asset Under Management (AUM) of the central government (Rs 1.45 trillion) and state government (Rs 2.20 trillion) schemes have been invested through pension funds across the government securities (around 50 per cent), corporate bonds (around 36 per cent) and only around 10 per cent is in equities and rest in money market instruments,” it said, adding that the scheme has provided returns of around 9.5 per cent since inception.
