Two-wheelers neither luxury nor sin goods, merit GST rate revision: Finance Ministry

Two-wheelers currently attract 28 percent GST.

“Responding to a question about the need for lowering GST rates on two-wheelers, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman assured that this was indeed a good suggestion as this category is neither a luxury nor a sin good and hence merits a rate revision,”
Reducing goods and services tax (GST) on two-wheelers to 18 percent from the highest slab of 28 percent currently, could make bikes cheaper by up to Rs 10,000, said Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director at Bajaj Auto.

This “will be taken up with the GST Council”, the statements quoted Sitharaman as saying.

More than 60 survivors pulled from collapsed building in India

The cause of the accident was not clear. But building collapses are common in India, usually due to shoddy construction, substandard materials and disregard of regulations.

Every year, heavy downpours during the June to September monsoon season bring down rain-sodden small and large structures deemed too dangerous to live in.

More than 1,200 people were killed in 1,161 building collapses across India in 2017, according to latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau.

SC refuses to entertain plea for national policy for compensation to COVID-19 victims

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and R S Reddy dismissed the plea saying that every state has a different policy and gives compensation as per its financial power.

Advocate Deepak Prakash, appearing for petitioner Hashik Thayikandy, said that all he is asking for is a national policy to be formulated that would provide for uniform compensation throughout the country.

Rs 14.58 lakh compensation to kin of woman killed in accident

The deceased was at that time self-employed and earned Rs 12,000 per month, the applicants said, adding that they were dependent on her for their livelihood and hence, were seeking compensation.

The tribual in its order said the accident took place solely because of the rash and negligent driving on part of the tempo driver.

The tempo’s insurer, Reliance General Insurance Company Ltd, contested the claim, but the tribunal rejected its arguments.
