Dr Madhukar Mittal (Additional Professor, Department of Endocrinology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur) stated that the evidence linking consumption of processed and packaged foods high in salt, sugar and fats – otherwise known as nutrients of concern – to diabetes, heart disease and various forms of cancer is irrefutable.
He further stated that “India is fast emerging as the diabetes capital of the world. Obesity is on the rise. The entire food system must act now to safeguard people’s health. The food industry tends to make its food products more palatable by adding excess sugar or salt. As a result, we are consuming unnatural levels of these harmful ingredients – far exceeding the recommended thresholds.”
Airlines can operate maximum of 72.5 pc pre-Covid domestic flights: Govt
The carriers have been operating 65 per cent of their pre-Covid domestic flights since July 5 according to the ministry’s order. Between June 1 and July 5, the cap was at 50 per cent.
The ministry issued a fresh order on Thursday, wherein it modified the July 5 order stating that ”65 per cent capacity may be read as 72.5 per cent capacity”.
Amid decline in Covid cases, patients return to hospitals with requests for elective surgerie
Dr Nitin Arora, senior consultant, general surgery, Paras Healthcare in Gurgaon, said there has been a 200 per cent increase in elective surgeries.
“There is an interesting shift in the demands of patients. Earlier, they would say that we should not discharge them early or before they have fully recovered but now they want a minimum stay in hospital and ask whether the surgery can be done early in the day and they can be discharged before night. We are allowing patients to stay at the hospital for less time,” he said.

COVID-19: India’s drug regulator approves study on mixing of Covaxin and Covishield doses
Separately, a recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) involving 98 people, 18 of whom had inadvertently received Covishield as the first dose and Covaxin as the second in Uttar Pradesh, showed that combining these two COVID-19 vaccines elicited better immunogenicity than two doses of the same vaccine.
The study also found that immunisation with combination of Covishield and Covaxin was safe and the adverse effects were also found to be similar when compared to the same dose regimen.
