Record single-day spike of 40,425 COVID-19 cases; India’s tally crosses 11 lakh

The death toll due to the disease rose to 27,497 with 681 fatalities reported in one day.India’s COVID-19 tally crossed the 11-lakh mark, just three days after it crossed the ten-lakh mark.According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 1,40,47,908 samples have been tested up to July 19 with 2,56,039 samples being tested on Sunday.Of the 681 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, 258 were reported from Maharashtra, 91 from Karnataka, 78 from Tamil Nadu, 56 from Andhra Pradesh, 38 from Uttar Pradesh, 36 from West Bengal, 31 from Delhi, 20 from Gujarat and 15 from Madhya Pradesh.

Corona Kavach health insurance policy evokes good response: Insurers

“The response has been tremendous as people are quite eager to buy these plans. Since these plans have gone live on the PolicyBazaar’s website, the company has been selling 300-500 policies per day,” said Amut Chhabra, Head-Health Insurance, Policybazaar.com.

Most customers buying these plans are young individuals, he said, adding that “the policies are very much affordable like Rs 208 monthly, which is a fairly cheap amount.” Observing that the response to the Corona Kavach is from across the country, he said, the policy is “following the same trend as the corona situation right now in the country with people from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi NCR showing massive interest in the newly launched plans”.

Ensure ban on petcoke,furnace oil; use cleaner fuels,NGT directs CPCB

The tribunal was hearing pleas filed by Sumit Kumar and Amarjeet Kumar seeking a ban on the use of all forms of petcoke, as it emits fine particulate matter (PM) which is harmful to human health.

According to the plea, the objection to the use of petcoke and furnace oil, which has already been banned in certain states, is causing of huge emission of sulphur dioxide and other pollutants.

NGT junks plea seeking alternative methods of cremation to reduce air pollution

The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by Delhi resident Parmod Kumar Bhatia and others seeking alternative methods of cremation to reduce air pollution.

The plea, filed through advocate Rahul Choudhary, said there are several reports published over the years which show that wood based cremation contributes significantly towards the air pollution.

HC asks govt about compensation for kin of deceased frontline staff

The petitioner had sought direction to the state government to declare frontline workers, including doctors, police personnel and others, who died after contracting the deadly infection on duty, as martyrs and to give their families compensation.

In its response to the petition last week,the state government had said insurance cover is being provided to all healthcare workers in private and government-run hospitals under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package – Insurance Scheme for Health Workers.

Lloyd’s underwriters sue Indiana Archdiocese for not disclosing allegations of child sexual abuse

Underwriters for Lloyd’s of London contends in a federal lawsuit filed Monday that when the archdiocese applied for excess sexual misconduct liability insurance in June 2019, it failed to disclose abuse allegations against Rev. David J. Marcotte reported months before its application was filed.The lawsuit asks a judge to rescind the insurance policy and render it void, The Indianapolis Star reported.
