As India’s economy shrunk by 7.3 per cent last year, the daily average wage for about 230 million Indians — enough to make the world’s fifth-largest nation — dropped below the Rs 375 ($5) threshold, according to a study by the Azim Premji University in Bangalore. “An alarming 90 per cent of respondents” reported “that their households had suffered a reduction in food intake as a result of the lockdown,” the study said.
The number of people living in households with daily incomes below $5 level spiked from 298.6 million, at the start of the outbreak in March 2020 to 529 million at the end of October, the study said.

Nearly 39,000 pigs died in Assam due to African Swine Fever in last 18 months
Assam’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Atul Bora said 38,700 pigs died due to African Swine Fever since its detection in the north- eastern state in 2020.As many as 13,200 families have been economically affected as a result of the pig deaths, the minister said.
However, the government has not paid any compensation to the affected families as the matter is under the jurisdiction of the Centre, Bora said.
As per central rules, there is a provision of paying compensation based on the culling of ASF-affected pigs.
Flooding affects parts of Europe after heavy rainfall
German government spokesman Steffen Seibert described the images from regions hardest hit by flooding as “terrible”.

India, the world’s third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, plans to expand its renewable power capacity nearly five-fold to 450 gigawatts by the end of the decade, aiming to reduce dependence on fossil fuels that currently drive its economy. Solar power will account for around 62% of the 2030 target, meaning the country will need to add about 26 gigawatts of capacity annually for the next nine years. The country’s own factories can currently meet less than half the demand for modules.
The government is giving 45 billion rupees ($603 million) to companies setting up solar manufacturing facilities.
People cutting spends on health, grocery as fuel prices bite, say SBI economists
”As consumers are spending more on fuel, it is crowding out expenses on health. Our analysis of SBI card spends indicates that spend on non-discretionary health expenditure has been substantially reduced to accommodate increased expenditure on fuel,” group chief economic adviser Soumya Kanti Ghosh said.
”In fact such spending has more than crowded out the spending on other non-discretionary items, like grocery and utility services to such an extent that the demand for such products has significantly declined,” he added.
China tightens control over cybersecurity in data crackdown
Beijing is increasingly sensitive about control over information about its people and economy. Companies are barred from storing data about Chinese customers outside China. Companies including ride-hailing service Didi Global Inc, which recently made its US stock market debut, have been publicly warned to tighten data security.
Under the new rules, anyone in China who finds a vulnerability must tell the government, which will decide what repairs to make. No information can be given to “overseas organisations or individuals” other than the product’s manufacturer.
