IFC lends USD 250 mn to HDFC to promote affordable green housing finance

Green and energy-efficient housing can help cut emissions, as residential housing accounts for about 24 percent of the nation’s electricity consumption, IFC said.

”Green housing is largely regarded as a luxury market in the country, but given its climate benefits, IFC intends to challenge that perception and help boost green affordable housing by partnering with HDFC, with its deep penetration in the Indian housing market and significant commitment to promoting green,” IFC said.

Kerala vet doc gets patent for biodiesel from chicken waste

He said 100 kg of chicken waste, procured from slaughterhouses for which he gets paid up to Rs 7 a kg, can produce 1 liter of biodiesel, which offers over 38 km and can be sold at 40 percent of the diesel price now.

After seven-and-a-half years, the Indian Patent Office finally granted us the patent on July 7, 2021, for inventing ‘biodiesel produced from rendered chicken oil’, John Abraham, a veterinary-doctor-turned-inventor, an associate professor at the veterinary college here under the Kerala Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, told PTI from Wayanad.The higher mileage and lower pollution are because chicken waste contains 62 percent fat, offering the key energy content of Cetane at 72, while in normal diesel it is only 64. It also increases engine efficiency by 11 percent due to the presence of more oxygen, and reduces smoke levels by over 47 percent, Abraham said.

61 pc of global drowning deaths in 2019 was in Asia Pacific region: WHO

“Despite many lives being lost each year, drowning remains a largely unrecognised threat to health and well-being,” said Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia.

“We need to work across all sectors to develop national water safety plans and policies and implement tested and low-cost water safety interventions to prevent drowning and save lives. No child or adult should lose their life to drowning,” she said.

Need for relaunch of PMAY scheme with in-built credit-linked insurance: CII

”There is a need for a relaunch of the PMAY scheme with an in-built credit-linked insurance or a mandatory life insurance for all borrowers under the PMAY scheme to ensure that the intent of providing ‘Housing for All’ does not take a hit due to death or disability of the primary borrower. The family should inherit a home-not a loan,” CII Director-General Chandrajit Banerjee said.

Study shows more cases of GBS among those infected with COVID-19

Dr Pradyumna Oak, Co-author of the study and Director and Head of Neurology, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital said, “The study has proved an integral co-relation between COVID-19 and GBS, a rare neurological condition that forces the body’s immune system to attack the nervous system, causing potential paralysis. We have found that despite its rarity, COVID-19 appears to be one of the viral infections which causes GBS. Though the prognosis of GBS is extremely good in most patients, we suggest that all COVID-19 should be actively screened by a neurologist to detect early signs of GBS for timely care.”

The doctors also said that people who have survived the pandemic and those who were infected with COVID-19 are increasingly coming to the hospital many weeks later with symptoms such as headache, giddiness, fatigue, cognitive difficulties, memory problems, anxiety, depression, stroke, pain and sleep disorders. In the OPD, up to 60 per cent of patients are coming with mental health issues like headache, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, feeling of loneliness etc, they said.
