Why COVID-19 is killing U.S.diabetes patients at alarming rates

America’s mortality rates from diabetes have been climbing since 2009 and exceed most other industrialized nations. Blacks and Latinos suffer from diabetes at higher rates than whites and have disproportionately suffered from COVID-19.

“Diabetes was already a slow-moving pandemic. Now COVID-19 has crashed through like a fast-moving wave,” said Elbert Huang, a professor of medicine and director of the University of Chicago’s Center for Chronic Disease Research and Policy.

COVID-19 Pandemic:India tally crosses 13 lakh with 48,916 fresh cases;death toll now 31,358

With 48,916 fresh cases, the country’s coronavirus infection tally surged to 13,36,861, while the death toll rose to 31,358 with 757 more people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours, data updated by the ministry at 8 am showed.
This is the third consecutive day when COVID-19 cases increased by more than 45,000.
There are currently 4,56,071 active cases of COVID-19 in the country.Thus, around 63.54 percent people have recovered so far.

Insurers explore officer coverage as police reform debate rages in US

U.S. insurers and brokers see a potential market opening up after a New York state lawmaker this month introduced legislation that would require individual officers to carry liability coverage for lawsuits alleging excessive force, abuse or other misconduct.
Currently, most police officers rely on municipalities to cover legal costs and payouts to victims, either from public funds or blanket insurance. Critics say that provides no incentive for officers to check their behavior, often leaving taxpayers on the hook. New York City paid $220 million last year for police department settlements of civil lawsuits, far more than any other of the city’s agencies, public data show.

Lloyd’s approves “Syndicate-in-a-Box”,to insure transport of future COVID-19 Vaccine

Syndicate 1796 has been developed by Parsyl, an insurance technology company and Lloyd’s Lab alumni, in close partnership with Ascot as managing agent, and in cooperation with AXAL XL, McGill and Partners and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The Syndicate forms the foundation of the new Global Health Risk Facility (GHRF) at Lloyd’s, which aims to provide comprehensive insurance and risk mitigation services to support the manufacturing and distribution of COVID-19 vaccine development efforts. It aims to start writing business from 1 October 2020.
