Lloyd’s Lab announces its sixth cohort with a focus on product simplification and climate

For the sixth cohort, the InsurTech start-ups have been selected based on solutions geared towards four key themes: climate change and decarbonisation; geopolitics; data and models; and claims support services. The teams will explore how they can support Lloyd’s customers around the world by creating simpler products capable of responding quickly in the aftermath of a disaster.

Global warming making Indian monsoon seasons stronger, more chaotic: Study

”We have found robust evidence for an exponential dependence: For every degree Celsius of warming, monsoon rainfalls will likely increase by about 5 percent,” said study lead author Anja Katzenberger from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany.

”Hereby we were also able to confirm previous studies but find that global warming is increasing monsoon rainfall in India even more than previously thought. It is dominating monsoon dynamics in the 21st century,” Katzenberger said.

Nepal battles worst forest fires in years as air quality drops

A senior official of Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said that wildfires were burning in at least 60 places across 22 of Nepal’s 77 administrative districts. 
The air quality index (AQI) in Kathmandu was at an unhealthy level of 174 on Friday, according to data published on iqair.com, a site that monitors air quality. An AQI level below 50 is considered good.

SBI drags feet on loan to Adani firm for controversial Australian coal mine

The Carmichael mine has been the focus of environmental protests since it was proposed in 2010. SBI shareholders have joined the opposition. BlackRock and Norway’s Storebrand ASA raised their objections over the past year, and Amundi SA divested its holdings of SBI’s green bonds because of the bank’s ties to the Carmichael mine.

SBI Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara, who took charge in October, is reticent to disburse the funds to Adani given the opposition to the Australian project, bank officials said. Still, no decision has yet been made about the loan, they said.
