EU countries to resume AstraZeneca vaccinations after ‘Safe, Effective’ verdict from WHO

The closely-watched announcement from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) came after the WHO and Britain’s health watchdog both said the vaccine was safe, adding that it was far riskier to not get the shot as several countries face a worrying rise in coronavirus cases.

However, Norway and Sweden said they were not ready to resume using the vaccine.

“Our study confirms what a number of others appeared to suggest — reinfection with COVID-19 is rare in younger, healthy people, but the elderly are at greater risk of catching it again,” said study co-author Steen Ethelberg, from the Statens Serum Institut.

“Since older people are also more likely to experience severe disease symptoms, and sadly die, our findings make clear how important it is to implement policies to protect the elderly during the pandemic,” Ethelberg said.

Lockdown is an option, says Maharashtra CM as Covid cases rise alarmingly

The state of 112 million people has already imposed a lockdown in some districts and put curbs on cinemas, hotels and restaurants until the end of the month. The rules were set to tighten further in Mumbai with mandatory testing to limit movement inside malls and cinemas, a senior official with the city’s COVID task-force said.

“I see lockdown as an option going ahead. But I trust people of the state to cooperate (and follow the COVID-19 norms voluntarily) like the last time,” he said.

Need to change Covaxin composition not felt yet due to vaccine’s good efficacy against mutant variants: Government

Covaxin’s efficacy against South African strain is ongoing, he said.

As for the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine Covishield, it has shown 74.6 per cent efficacy against the UK strain and has been shown to be effective against the Brazil strain.

However, its efficacy against the South Africa strain is just 10 per cent, the minister stated.
“The total number of cases with UK, South Africa and Brazil variants of the Covid virus in the country as on date is 400,” the Ministry said in a statement.
