Irdai gives final nod for merger of HDFC ERGO Health with HDFC ERGO General Insurance

Under this, share exchange ratio of 100:385 has been okayed by the board of the subsidiary companies which would mean allocation of 385 shares in HDFC ERGO Health for 100 shares in HDFC ERGO
With the merger of HDFC ERGO Health Insurance with HDFC ERGO  General Insurance, the number of there stand-alone health insurers will from seven to five..

Earlier,IRDA had asked Reliance General Insurance to take over Reliance Health Insurance as the exclusive health insurers was had fallen short of solvency margin and the financially troubled promoter company Reliance Capital was unable to infuse capital in its health insurance subsidiary.

Japan suicides rise as economic impact of coronavirus hits home

According to preliminary police data, the total number of suicides for October was 2,153, an increase of more than 300 from the previous month and the highest monthly tally since May 2015.

Of October’s cases, 851 were women, a rise of 82.6% over the same month in 2019. The number of suicides by men rose 21.3%.

Cases of suicide had been falling steadily until July but then the economic impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak hit home and the numbers started rising, activists say.

Climate finance neglects small-scale farmers – new report

Small-scale farmers currently produce 50 percent of the world’s food calories. However, higher temperatures – together with increased incidences of drought and flooding – destroy crops and livestock and make it difficult for them to continue to feed their communities and earn a living.
“It is unacceptable that the people who produce much of the world’s food, and who are at the greatest mercy of increasingly unpredictable weather, receive the least support. Small-scale farmers living on marginal lands are on the frontline of climate change and should have access to the climate finance they need to adapt their production,”said Gilbert F. Houngbo, President of IFAD..

New India’s net profit rises 5 % to Rs 555.59 cr in Q2 FY 2020-21, combined ratio improves from 116.62% to 105.75%

Thanks to the lock down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, -for the first time , NIA has booked underwriting profits in motor during the period.  The company’s  liability portfolio has been profitable during the period.

Atul Sahai, Chairman Cum Managing Director, NIA said,”Considering the challenging macro environment, the company has delivered excellent results for the quarter and the half year ended 30th Sep 2020. Compared to the Industry the company has registered much better growth and has also increased its market share to 14.56 per cent as of Sep 30,2020. The growth has been accompanied by healthy operating metrics with combined ratio declining from 116.62 per cent in H1FY20 to 105.75 per cent  in H1FY21.”

Why Pfizer’s ultra-cold COVID-19 vaccine will not be at the local pharmacy any time soon

The main issue is that the vaccine, which is based on a novel technology that uses synthetic mRNA to activate the immune system against the virus, needs to be kept at minus 70 degrees Celsius (-94 F) or below.

“The cold chain is going to be one of the most challenging aspects of delivery of this vaccination,” said Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

Still no clarity from UK to assess financial market access, says EU

With less than two months before Britain’s full access to the EU ends under post-Brexit transition arrangements on Dec. 31, London’s giant financial hub faces being largely cut off from its biggest customer.

Britain’s finance minister, Rishi Sunak, said on Monday he would not wait for Brussels to decide on UK access and would instead unilaterally allow EU financial firms to offer selected services to UK customers from January.
