Coronavirus compounds climate disasters but shows action can work- Red Cross

Almost half of 140 million people around the world, who are hit by to disasters caused by extreme weather fuelled by climate change, with more severe storms, floods, and heatwaves live in the Asia-Pacific region, the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said in a report published this week.
“Recovery from disasters is so much harder when livelihoods have been hit hard by COVID-19 and the measures taken to contain it,” said Maarten van Aalst, director of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and author of the report.

Govt prioritising vaccinating eligible people in UP, Punjab: Report

The cumulative COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country crossed 78 crore on Friday. The government said 20 per cent of India’s adult population have received both doses of COVID-19 vaccine and 62 per cent have got at least one dose.

Of all the vaccines used, around 87.8 per cent are Covishield manufactured by Serum Institute, around 12.11 per cent are Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and less than one per cent Sputnik V.

Adherence to COVID-19-appropriate behaviour during festive season key to prevent 3rd wave: Experts

”Currently, there is a declining trend of COVID-19 cases and we are in a pretty good situation. However, the coming few weeks with the festive season ongoing and with that associated changes of decrease in Covid-appropriate behavior, large gatherings, and super-spreading events can be a deciding factor for the third wave,” AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria said.

He said the next two-three months are crucial in terms of preventive strategies for the country to continue to be in a good position.

NIH grants $470 mln to conduct studies on long-term effects of COVID-19

The grant is part of an initiative the main U.S. health research body launched in February to understand why symptoms of the illness persist long after infection in some cases – a condition known as “long COVID”- and why some individuals develop new or returning symptoms after recovery.

The most common prolonged symptoms include pain, headaches and fatigue, but the condition has been linked to a higher risk of kidney problems as well as smell distortions in other studies.

Fresh cyclonic circulation to bring heavy rainfall over east India from Sep 18-19

”A cyclonic circulation (is) likely to develop over north Bay of Bengal on September 17. It is likely to move west-northwestwards towards Odisha-West Bengal coast during the subsequent three days,” the IMD said.

”Rainfall activity is likely to increase over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall and isolated heavy falls over above areas on September 18-19,” it added.

Earlier this week, a deep depression brought heavy rainfall over Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
