At 11:40 a.m., the NSE shut down completely for trading, leaving traders wondering what would happen to their open positions.

The incident occurred just ahead of the monthly derivatives expiry on the last Thursday of the month, when traders close or roll over their open positions.

“This was an unmitigated disaster because you need to communicate this proactively. Not one person in the market knew they would shut down the exchange,” Varun Khandelwal, director at Bullero Capital, a New Delhi-based proprietary trading firm.

But the pandemic notwithstanding, more than half the people surveyed (54 per cent) were keen to buy a vehicle in 2021 as against one-third (34 per cent) of the respondents who had decided not to make any such purchases this year, it said, adding, the interest in buying vehicles during the pandemic can be explained by the necessity of personal mobility.

India says virus variants not behind upsurge in cases

A top government health official confirmed the long-time presence of two mutants – N440K and E484Q – in those two states as well as elsewhere in the country and abroad. Authorities have also found the UK variant in 187 people in India, the South African one in six and one case of the Brazilian mutation.

“There is no reason today for us to believe, on the basis of scientific information, that these are responsible for the upsurge of the outbreak,” Vinod Kumar Paul, who heads a government committee on vaccines, told a news conference.

“Till now, no correlation has been established between the variants and the rise in the number of cases reported in a few states. It is still under investigation,” he said.

“More than 2 lakh mutations in the virus have been recorded globally. But did all the mutations incite a rise in cases? The mutations are a natural process of evolution in a pathogen. It is relevant only if it induces a change in the trend of disease spread,” Singh explained.

Lloyd’s insurer Brit says it will not insure Adani coal mine

Twenty-six Lloyd’s syndicates have now said they will not insure the mine, according to action group Insure Our Future.

Adani has begun construction at Carmichael together with an associated rail project, with plans to start producing 10 million tonnes of coal per year from 2021.

The coal industry is in the spotlight for its higher levels of greenhouse gas emissions than crude oil.

Govt warns states of worsening COVID-19 situation if rules ignored
