Cyclone Tauktae causes economic losses of over $ 2 billion, agriculture hit most: RMSI 

Pushpendra Johari, senior vice president, sustainability, RMSI said“Cyclone Tauktaeis an unique event that has impacted all coastal western states and union territories of India . Though the cyclone effect on Kerala, Karnataka and  Maharashtra and Goa was not severe, Gujarat and Diu are badly impacted.”

“Though the cyclone has made a landfall , this is not the end of our distress. Recent climate change studies have highlighted rising  sea surface temperature in the Arbian sea. This will increase the cyclone frequency in these region. We should improve our preparedness even further to deal with more such events in future.”

IMD reports new cyclone formation, Yaas, at Bay of Bengal

“Low pressure of the new cyclonic storm is expected to start forming in the Bay of Bengal by May 22. May 23 should mark depression stage, and the final cyclonic storm is expected to hit by May 24-25,” he told ANI.

The cyclone Yaas will hit the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal on May 26. Meanwhile, both the states will experience heavy rainfall from May 22 to 26.

Cyclone kills 19 in India, 127 missing after vessel sinks in

The cyclone Tauktae, which made landfall in the western state of Gujarat late on Monday, has hit power supply in 2,400 villages in the state as a thousand electricity pylons were damaged, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said in a media address.

Nearly 160 roads have been destroyed, 40,000 trees uprooted and several houses damaged, Rupani added.

“The standing crops would have suffered definite losses, especially in areas of Saurashtra where the cyclone hit the hardest,” said Manish Bhardwaj, principal secretary at the state agriculture department. Before reaching Gujarat, the cyclone left a trail of destruction as it brushed past the coastal states of Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, as well as Maharashtra, home to India’s financial hub of Mumbai, authorities said.

U.S. SEC chair planning new workforce data disclosures for public companies

He said staff would propose a new rule on disclosing the workforce or “human capital” metrics. Those disclosures could include data on issues such as workforce diversity, part-time versus full-time workers, and employee turnover, according to advocacy groups that have been pushing for the new rules.

“This is one of my top priorities and will be an early focus during my tenure at the SEC,” Gensler told the gathering.

The SEC is ramping up its ESG agenda to execute on Democrats’ priorities to address issues such as climate change and social injustice.
